OneWebDay around the globe

January 16th, 2008  |  by onewebday  |  Published in Uncategorized

We have a small twirling globe on our desk here at OneWebDay – the oceans are a uniform dark blue, and the countries are carefully pricked out with their own individual colors.

OneWebDay is a thoroughly local event, even though it is global in scope. There is no single OneWebDay message – the overarching idea is to promote the free flow of information online, and to support the notion of interoperability, but these simple ideas are like the word “tree.” They are broad concepts that can be disaggregated into a host of interlocking ideas that are all essentially “tree-like.”

A local celebration of OneWebDay can and should be devoted to issues of local concern that are somehow connected to the free flow of information online. Maybe you’d like to see better internet access. Maybe you’d like to see less censorship. Maybe you’d like to see better user information about security. Maybe you’d like to have more free access for older people. Every town can have its own flavor of OneWebDay.

It’s the right time to start planning your local event for OneWebDay. Starting with a get-together, and having some food and drink around, is useful.
