Plans for 2008

January 11th, 2008  |  by onewebday  |  Published in Uncategorized  |  1 Comment

OneWebDay 2008 falls on a Monday this year. It’s not too soon to start planning what you’re going to do to recognize OneWebDay in September.

The idea behind OneWebDay is to recognize the threats to the Internet around the world – and to do something about them.

We want to make sure that people all across the globe expect that they will have access to the Internet that isn’t controlled by gatekeepers of various kinds – network providers and many other actors – and we want people to help each other learn how to contribute to our Internet. The Internet is us, not some collection of machines.

This double goal (recognize threats, do something about them) can be met in all kinds of ways. The point is to have the recognition of OneWebDay be visible, online and off. Getting together in a public place to talk about the future of the Internet is one way. Getting together to increase connectivity in an underserved place is another. Helping older people get online and learn how to use online applications is yet a third way.

This is a very decentralized event. We have seen OneWebDay events take place in dozens of countries around the globe, and we’re just beginning. You’re in charge – OneWebDay is all yours.

If you’d like to blog here, just register on the right. If you’d like to comment, go ahead. It’s time to get going for 2008.

The ‘threat’ emphasis is a definite change in OWD outlook from that previous years which was simply to celebrate the ‘good’ things about the web.

I think the common thread is freedom. The internet provides an unprecedented ability to communicate freely. That is the integral element worth celebrating, protecting and nurturing.
